Puget Sound senior Ashley Agcaoili was stuck in class when the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament selection show was held on Monday.
Fortunately, her professor was a basketball fan and was kind enough to let her follow along on her phone.
It wasn’t long into the broadcast that Agcaoili was relieved to see the Loggers given an at-large spot in the 64-team tournament.

Puget Sound will open with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday in what will be Agcaoili’s first taste of postseason play.
"We’ve been working toward this since our freshman year," Agcaoili said after Tuesday’s practice. "It’s always been our goal to get to the national tournament, and we’ve arrived."
Agcaoili, a 2011 Maryknoll graduate, has been a key part of this year’s success, starting all 27 games for the Loggers.
Over her four-year career, she’s started 87 games and averaged a personal-best 12.1 points and 3.1 rebounds a game as a junior.
She’s been more of a facilitator as a senior but came up big with nine points and five boards in the critical 71-64 win over Whitworth in the Northwest Conference tournament semifinals.
Puget Sound lost in the final, 66-61 to George Fox, which earned the automatic berth, but Agcaoili was pretty confident she would still get to play in the NCAA tournament.
"We had a pretty good idea that we were going to get in," Agcaoili said. "We kept our fingers crossed, but our coaching staff reassured us we would get in."
Puget Sound enters the tournament 23-4 overall, with its only losses coming against George Fox and Whitworth, which are both nationally ranked.
It’s the school’s sixth NCAA postseason appearance and first in five years — the season before Agcaoili arrived.
"Every year has gotten better since I got here," Agcaoili said. "Our coaching staff has done a really good job of recruiting players from different areas and continue to make us better."
Agcaoili didn’t think she would play basketball in college for most of her senior year of high school. It wasn’t until the very end that she received interest from Puget Sound.
UPS was the only school where she would have an opportunity to play, but it took a trip to the campus in Tacoma, Wash., for her to make that decision.
"It was definitely a matter of me coming up here and making sure it’d be somewhere I wanted to be," Agcaoili said. "I loved the campus, I loved the team and I love the environment, and that’s what got me hooked.
"I never regret the decision now. Being able to leave Hawaii and come up to the mainland and play basketball is an opportunity not a lot of kids get, so I never take it for granted, and know every day how very lucky I am."
