Speed may be factor in man’s critical crash
Maui police say a 30-year-old Wailuku man may have been speeding when he lost control of his car on Hana Highway in Haiku on Monday night and hit a utility pole.
The driver was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition with life-threatening injuries after the accident, which occurred just before 10 p.m.
Police said the victim was driving alone in a 1997 Cadillac four-door sedan traveling north on Hana Highway when he lost control of his car, crossed the centerline and hit a utility pole north of Holokai Road.
After hitting the pole, the car continued northbound within the embankment along the southbound lane, striking a cluster of mailboxes, and then hit a second utility pole.
