Cleanup of Kaimuki canal needs a helping hand
Volunteers are needed to help with the Clean Canal Project in Kaimuki, scheduled for 8 a.m. March 29.
The task at hand is the cleanup of the canal beneath the bridge at Saint Louis School across from 3rd and Waialae avenues. Volunteers from the community, the school and Neighborhood Boards No. 5 and 8 are expected to participate.
Event coordinator and Diamond Head/Kapahulu/ St. Louis Heights Neighborhood Board member Lee Manfredi said the last big rainfall brought large debris down the canal, including mattresses, tree branches and garbage, which has clogged the natural flow of the stream from Palolo Valley.
Since the city is short-handed, the cleanup of the canal is left up to community volunteers, according to Manfredi. Work gloves, bags and tools will be provided, along with snacks and water.
Contact Manfredi at 735-8466 for more information.
