Paddlers representing Honolulu Pearl Canoe Club have grown accustomed to waiting for one of its elders to return to the water.

Nearly three years ago to the day, Honolulu Pearl’s members watched in horror as its koa canoe manned by a women’s novice crew was launched by rough surf into the sand at Nanakuli Beach like a runaway freight train. While two paddlers suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the harrowing ordeal, the canoe — dubbed Honaunau — cracked at multiple points and the club’s paddlers were obligated to carry the vessel’s splintered remains onto shore.

"We were going really fast, and at that moment when I knew we were going to crash, I said a quick prayer: ‘Honaunau, let’s protect each other,’ " said Chantel Ching, a Honolulu Pearl paddler situated in the front seat of the canoe that day who suffered lower-body lacerations as her legs slid through the splintered vessel. "I knew Honaunau was there for us.

"We’ve healed. Now we want Honaunau to heal, too, and get back on the water. She’s such a big part of us and part of our club."

While Honaunau was expected to be repaired by summer’s end, that arduous process was put on hold indefinitely Thursday in Kaneohe after thieves made off with two koa gunnels valued at well over $2,000 that master canoe builder and educator "Uncle" Bobby Puakea was preparing to add to the canoe as one of the final steps in the refurbishment process.

"Honaunau is a member of our family, and we’re hoping (the thieves) will return the koa," said Honolulu Pearl coach Tammy Dureg, who compared the canoe’s absence from competitions to that of an athlete dealing with a catastrophic knee or shoulder injury and facing an arduous rehabilitation process. "A lot of people within the paddling community have been very supportive and are looking out for us. I don’t know exactly how far this will set us back."

As Honolulu Pearl’s group of 55 paddlers participated in Sunday’s Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association Waimanalo Canoe Club Regatta at Waimanalo Beach Park, they did so in a borrowed koa canoe on loan from Puakea. The canoe is appropriately dubbed Ho‘ola, which means "new beginning" or "to bring to life" in Hawaiian.

"Our focus is to share the culture of Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling," said Dureg of the club, which carries a majority membership of military personnel and practices in Pearl Harbor. "When they do leave — we have a number of paddlers leaving this summer — they can take a little piece of Hawaii with them."

Honaunau serves not only as a vessel in which paddlers compete — OHCRA clubs are required to race in koa canoes in accordance with the sport’s ancient Hawaiian roots — but also carries a storied history that dates back to before Hawaii became the 50th state.

THE CANOE was originally completed in 1956 from a koa log harvested in Papa, South Kona, for use by the Honaunau Canoe Club. The vessel was later purchased and used by Hui Nalu Canoe Club before eventually making its way to Honolulu Canoe Club, which added "Pearl" to complete its current moniker in 2002.

"It’s very disappointing that something like this happened to our club; Uncle Bobby has reached out to help us," said Honolulu Pearl paddler Kim Hasegawa, who was seated right behind Ching three years ago and was tossed from the now-58-year-old canoe upon impact with the sand. "We’ve fundraised every year to help pay back Uncle Bobby, and also help him out. We learn a lot about canoe building, and our paddlers understand holistically more about paddling, including the spirituality behind it."

Paddlers took advantage of calm conditions Sunday as Kailua headlined the AAA division (27-39 crews entered) with 162 points, while Hui Nalu (149), Outrigger (143) and Lanikai (141) rounded out the large division.

The four clubs remained close throughout the day, but Kailua scored points consistently down the stretch to fend off Hui Nalu and Lanikai, who combined to win nine of the final 13 races.

Keahiakahoe took the AA division (14-26 crews), securing 64 points and besting Waikiki Surf Club (38 points) and Leeward Kai (32).

Hui Lanakila led the way in the A division (1-13 crews), notching 43 points to hold off host Waimanalo (33) and Healani (24).

OHCRA enters a bye week, and returns to the water on July 4 for the annual Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta in Waikiki.

Na Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a will hold its sixth event of the season on Sunday with the Na Keiki O Ka Mo‘i Regatta at Maili Beach.
