A pickup truck crashed into a rock wall near Kaaawa Elementary School, critically injuring the truck’s 30-year-old driver Friday night, according to an Emergency Medical Services report. He later died, officials said.

The accident happened at about 11:44 p.m.  The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, according to EMS.

Paramedics took the man to the hospital in “extremely critical condition.”

Police closed Kamehameha Highway and contra-flowed traffic around the area while Traffic Division officers investigated the accident. The road reopened by about 3 a.m.
