Island Air unveils new in-flight magazine
Island Air, the interisland carrier owned by billionaire Larry Ellison, has a new in-flight magazine. The quarterly magazine is named Kikaha, or to soar or glide, and is available on all Island Air flights, the company said Tuesday.
"Appealing to both visitors and locals, Kikaha was designed to be an extension of Island Air’s new brand," said Island Air CEO Paul Casey in a news release.
Jason Cutinella, president and CEO of Nella Media Group, is the publisher of Kikaha, and Lisa Yamada, also with Nella Media, is the editor.
Funding from GIFT Foundation available
The GIFT Foundation of Hawaii, which raises money to give to nonprofit organizations, is accepting applications from Hawaii nonprofits for selection as beneficiaries of its 2014 fundraising efforts. Applications can be downloaded at giftfoundationofhawaii.org and must be submitted by May 1.
The foundation will hold a costume-themed event Oct. 24 to raise funds. The event will be co-chaired by Jon Bryan and Emily Kawashima. The GIFT Foundation, which began in 2003, gives away as much as $200,000 each year.
"Our goal is to encourage young adults to participate in philanthropic giving," said Bryan. "Part of the GIFT mission is to raise awareness of organizations that make a difference in our society, and promote giving and volunteering among our peers."
Lanai documentary festival in the works
The owner of most of Lanai island, Larry Ellison, plans to establish the Lanai Documentary Film Festival as an annual event.
Information about the event was posted Tuesday at the website lanaidff.com.
The website indicated the first festival will be held next year, and the schedule will to be announced this fall.
The festival "will showcase short and feature-length documentaries and direct participants to take tangible action on issues that will impact the world," according to the website.
"We intend to cast the net wider than our fellow filmmakers by providing a platform for everyday people courageous enough to pick up a camera and share his or her story," said Audrey Cavenecia, a representative for the festival.

‘Olelo Community Media has named Angela Angel to the newly created position of chief production officer. She joined ‘Olelo in 1997 as director of client services. Her experience also includes being television producer for the Honolulu City Council and owner and vice president of Excel Entertainment.
Bonterra Solar has named Christian Adams president. He joined the company in 2013 as a partner and sales director and also serves as vice president of the Hawaii Solar Energy Association board.
Hawaiian Airlines named Jim Landers director-strategic initiatives for its Strategy and Transformation division. He is a Navy veteran with 25 years of aviation experience including director of operations for the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, commanding officer for the USS Makin Island and Patrol Squadron Forty-Seven at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
