High surf expected to last until Jan. 1
Large surf is expected until New Year’s Day, although maybe not at dangerous levels, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.
A large northwest swell is due today and a high surf warning goes into effect at 6 a.m. for the north shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu, Molokai and Maui.
North shores will see 14- to 18-foot levels this afternoon, but will reach warning levels of 20 to 25 feet tonight.
The west shores of Oahu and Molokai are expected to reach advisory levels, while the Kauai and Niihau coastal areas will reach warning levels.
A high tide will coincide with the swell late today and early Friday morning, which will add extra volume to the waves, the weather service said.
