Hawaii Hilo splits doubleheader
Hawaii Hilo shortstop Byron Freitas went 4-for-5 and Will Thayer drove in two runs in the Vulcans’ 10-9 win over Northwest Nazarene in the first game of a baseball doubleheader Tuesday in Nampa, Idaho.
Micah Nakasone, the third of six Vulcans pitchers to see action, picked up the win.
UH Hilo was held to three hits in the second game and Northwest Nazarene earned a split with a 4-0 win.
Rainbow Wahine ninth at UC Irvine
The University of Hawaii women’s golf team finished ninth at the UC Irvine Invitational on Tuesday at the Santa Ana Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine shot a final-round 309 to close the two-day tournament at 926. Freshman Izzy Leung shot a 2-over-par 74 on Tuesday and led UH with a three-round total of 229 to tie for 24th.
Stanford won the event at even-par 864.
Iolani graduate Marissa Chow of Pepperdine shot a final-round 72 and tied for 13th at 7-over 223.
Aoki leads Vulcans to third place
Nyssa Aoki tied for second to lead the Hawaii Hilo women’s golf team to a tie for third place after Tuesday’s final round of the St. Edward’s Invitational at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
Aoki finished the 36-hole tournament at 8-over-par 150 (74-76), three strokes behind medalist Linda Brown of Cal State East Bay. The Vulcans posted a team score of 625, tied with Incarnate Word for third place and two strokes behind tournament champion St. Edward’s.
Kristen Sawada tied for ninth at 155, while Kacie Harada tied for 15th place at 156. Jade Salvador, who competed as an individual, tied for 19th at 157.
