James Madison shuts out UH softball team
Jailyn Ford hit two of James Madison’s three home runs in the Dukes’ 6-0 win over the University of Hawaii softball team on Sunday in the final game of the Jack in the Box Spring Fling Tournament.
JMU right-hander Heather Kiefer held UH (11-10) to five hits and earned her second complete-game shutout of the day. Kiefer also went the distance in JMU’s 3-0 win over California earlier Sunday morning.
UH left-hander Loie Kesterson gave up four runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings and fell to 5-3.
Ford led off the top of the second with her first home run of the season to give James Madison the lead. The Dukes loaded the bases in the third and UH shortstop Sarina Jaramillo made a diving stop on Erica Fields’ grounder up the middle but Mimi Morris scored on the play to give JMU a 2-0 lead.
Ford, who entered the game with five RBIs this season, struck again in the fifth with a two-run homer to right center.
Caitlin Sandy added a two-run homer with two out in the top of the seventh to extend the Dukes’ lead to 6-0 and Kiefer finished off the shutout.
