Crash kills girl, 16, operating scooter
A 16-year-old girl died Thursday after a scooter crash on the Likelike Highway onramp to the H-3 freeway, police said.
Police said the teen lost control of her green Vespa scooter, hit a guardrail and was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she later died.
The crash happened at about 8:35 a.m., police said.
Police closed the Likelike Highway onramp to the freeway in the town-bound direction and reopened it before 11 a.m.
Police Lt. Robert Towne said the girl’s father was following her on his motorcycle and witnessed the crash.
He said speed and inexperience may have been factors. The onramp has a 25 mph speed limit and a sharp bend that "catches you off guard," he said.
It is the third motorcycle fatality in the last 18 months, he said. It was the 17th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared with 16 for the same period last year.

Police arrested the man at 5:45 p.m. on three counts of second-degree attempted murder, three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and impersonating a law enforcement officer.
