County pools to close for swim meets
The county swimming pools in Kapaa and Waimea will be closed for three days beginning Saturday because the Kauai Interscholastic Federation is holding swim meets there, Kauai County announced.
The Kapaa pool will be closed on Saturday and Jan. 19, and the Waimea pool will be closed Jan. 12.
The normal hours of operation for the Kapaa swimming pool are Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4:30 p.m.
The Waimea pool is normally open Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4:30 p.m.
Both facilities are closed on Mondays and holidays including New Year’s Day.
Electrical workers get ready for rodeo
Hawaii island will be the site of a rodeo in February — for electrical workers.
Hawaii Electric Light Co. said the rodeo will be a friendly competition among electrical workers who erect and maintain poles, wires and underground cables.
Contests include pole-climbing, "hurt man" rescues and other simulations of challenges electrical workers confront.
The competition will take place at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area in Kailua-Kona on Feb. 23. The rodeo is sponsored by HELCO and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1260.
About 40 teams of line workers from Hawaii and the mainland are expected to compete.
