Hawaii brought the I-405 carpool lane inside the Bren Events Center on Saturday afternoon, getting an HOV performance, with five players scoring in double figures.
Led by junior guard Marissa Wimbley’s career-high 13 points in 17 minutes off the bench, and a season-best 10 3-pointers, the Rainbow Wahine cruised to their third straight Big West basketball victory, routing UC Irvine 85-50. It was the first time since Dec. 23, 2003, that Hawaii (11-7, 3-2) had double-digit treys. They also hit 10 that day in a 64-59 loss to Tennessee Tech.
Wimbley was 9 years old.
"That’s a long time. I was just starting to play basketball," said Wimbley, who also finished with career bests of field goals (4) and 3-pointers (3). "It’s good when you have the green light to shoot.
"This gives us a huge boost of confidence. We wanted to finish 2-0 on the road. We have three tough home games coming up and this was a good team win with all of us getting to play."
First up at the Stan Sheriff Center will be Long Beach State on Thursday. The 49ers (17-2, 4-1) lost their first conference game Saturday, 67-52 to visiting CSUN (14-6, 4-2); the Matadors will be in town Saturday.
All 12 on the UH travel roster played, with all but freshman forward Breana Jones (eight minutes) scoring. That balance had three Wahine starters in double figures. Senior guard Morgan Mason scored 12 — all in the second half — and junior center Connie Morris and junior guard Destiny King had 11 points each.
All of King’s points came in the first half, when the Rainbow Wahine used an 18-3 run to break an 8-8 tie. Reserve sophomore point guard Bri Harris also had 11 as Hawaii outscored UCI 50-30 in the second half, sparked by seven 3-pointers.
The Rainbow Wahine shot 50 percent from behind the arc (10-for-20) while having trouble from closer range. Hawaii was 13-for-21 from the free-throw line.
"If I have to pick my poison, it would be 3-pointers over free throws any day," Hawaii coach Laura Beeman said. "It was more fatigue and not focusing on the line.
"This was a huge win for us with our big homestand coming up, having the momentum. The key today was getting on (UCI) really quick and it made it tough for them to come back on us."
Hawaii’s defense again was solid, frustrating UCI (3-17, 0-5). Sophomore forward Mokun Fajemisin broke loose late for a game-high 16 points, but sophomore guard Irene Chavez had to settle for scoring mostly on free throws, with nine of her 13 points coming from the line.
Hawaii’s aggressiveness also had Anteaters sophomore guard Ashley Merrill in foul trouble early; she fouled out with 13:28 left and her team trailing 55-28.
"We are starting to play better because we are healthier, but we’re still a work in progress," Beeman said. "This was going to be a tough game and we had to work through the fatigue. We didn’t play well here last year (winning 55-54 on Mason’s jumper with five seconds to go).
"Today, we wanted to make a statement."
