Mililani cheerleaders win 2 at nationals
The Mililani High School cheerleaders saved their best for last.
The Trojans won two divisions at the JAMZ Cheer and Dance School Nationals at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas last Friday.
The big performances came after the school’s varsity squad placed fourth in the large division in the state championship meet in November.
Under coach Renesha Kierstedt and assistant Ally Kikumoto, the team practiced through the winter months after the regular fall cheer season ended to prepare for the nationals.
The hard work and teamwork paid off, according to Kierstedt and team spokesperson Dana Leonillo.
"Their motto this year was B.O.S.S. — best only side by side," Leonillo said.
In Las Vegas, Mililani won the High School Co-Ed Sideline Performance Cheer competition with a score of 84.30. The Trojans’ closest competitor was South Gate High School (Calif.) with 84.03.
The Trojans also won the Varsity Coed Show Cheer Level 2 category with 89.63 points — 5.50 points better than second-place Banning High School of Los Angeles.
In the Junior Varsity Show Cheer Level 1 Small competition, Mililani (82.47) placed second to Clairemont (87.17) of San Diego.
