Damien announces new principal
Daniel Casey has been named principal of Damien Memorial School starting next semester.
Casey will replace Peter Zawot, who has been Damien’s principal since 2010, according to a news release from the school.
Casey has been a member of the Christian Brothers’ North America Province leadership team for the past nine years.
Zawot has been promoted to a position on the North American provincial leadership team, which is based in his home state of New Jersey, according to Bernard Ho, Damien’s president and CEO.
Casey, a Chicago native, has a bachelor’s degree in speech and drama from Lewis College and a Master of Arts in communication arts from the University of Notre Dame. He also has a master’s degree from the University of San Francisco’s Institute for Catholic Educational Leadership in private school administration. Casey has been head of school at Seton Catholic Preparatory School in Chandler, Ariz., and at Brother Rice High School in Chicago.
Damien is a sixth- to 12th-grade school founded in 1962. It is currently coed from grades six to 10.
Maui paraglider found dead ID’d as Haiku man
Maui police identified Tuesday a 34-year-old paraglider who was found dead on Haleakala Crater Road as Paul J. MacDonald, 34, of Haiku.
Officers responding to a 6:37 p.m. call Monday found MacDonald’s body near the 3-mile marker of Haleakala Crater Road. Police determined that his paragliding equipment had become caught on power lines. MacDonald died at the scene.
Alleged robber also charged with assault
A 33-year-old man has been charged with robbing a Hilo convenience store Saturday and assaulting a police officer who was arresting him.
Jamal K.K. Hauoli-Ontai, who has no permanent address, was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault of a police officer, resisting arrest and promoting a detrimental drug. Bail was set at $63,000.
At about 3 a.m. Saturday a man purchased several items at the store and then threatened to shoot the clerk if he didn’t let the suspect take a pack of cigarettes without paying.
The suspect was located at 5:40 p.m. Saturday at the Mooheau Bus Terminal in Hilo. As an officer arrested him, the suspect became combative, causing minor injuries to the officer, police said.
