Who knew that romantic meant no kids?
Yeah, Most Romantic City, that could be us, mainly thanks to all the lovely beaches. Most Outdoorsy City, too, perhaps, because of the year-round sun. But Honolulu as the nation’s Best City for Child-Free Living? Somehow that seems wrong, given that the word ohana seems to pop up in every other sentence.
Of course, the statistics guiding the online identity management site mylife.com are hard to dispute. Two primary factors driving the rankings, according to the site, were "an active nightlife, such as a high number of bars per capita, and the potential to meet others who also don’t have kids — low percentage of households with children."
On that last point, Hawaii was the winner, No. 1 in all the states. But don’t forget: Some of these child-free households may have put kids through college and are just thrilled with the empty nest — done with tuition, ready to paint the town red.
Join the stars of the garden under the stars
The Foster Botanical Garden is a welcome oasis amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Honolulu. This Saturday evening it will be even more magical than usual, with the return of the popular Midsummer Night’s Gleam.
The event, from 4 to 9 p.m., will feature special activities for children, eclectic live entertainment and the wonderful flowers, trees and plants that are the ultimate stars of the 14-acre garden located at 50 N. Vineyard Blvd. If you’ve never visited this urban gem before, Saturday evening offers a lively introduction.
