Tall, talented Kahuku rolls by Moanalua
15JANUARY21_SPT OIA BOYS BASKETBALL - Red Raider’s #40 Denhym Brooke shoots to score over Na Menehune's #33 James Wilkins when the visiting Kahuku Red Raiders play the Moanalua Na Menehunes Wednesday in the OIA East division boys basketball game at Moanalua School on January 21

Kahuku coach Alan Akina wasn’t quite ready to call the Red Raiders’ 56-44 win over Moanalua on Wednesday a complete performance.
But …
"You can see it’s almost there," Akina said with a smile.
"We get stretches of playing great and we get some stretches of I don’t know what’s going on. But that just shows we need more practice time. We just need a little more time together. We’re getting there."
The fourth-ranked Red Raiders got double-digit scoring nights from three starters while incorporating a new member into the first five and improved to 5-1 in the OIA East boys basketball standings.
Senior forward Denhym Brooke led the Red Raiders with 17 points, swingman Samuta Avea added 16 points and center Hyrum Harris finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

"That’s kind of what we want. If we have guys at eight, 10, 15 (points), now we’re a team," Akina said. "We want to be able to spread it out.
"You can feel it, the last three or four practices have been good. They can sense it, that we’re getting there. Little frustrations here and there but you can see it creeping up."
A rangy Kahuku lineup added even more length with 6-foot-2 guard Tama Green making his first start. Green had been slowed by injury and illness early in the season and contributed four points while fellow guard Keanu Akina hit two 3-pointers.
"We’ve still got a bit of a way to go, but we’re growing together as a team and at school we’re hanging out," said Brooke, who transferred to Kahuku from New Zealand along with Harris and Green. "It’s just working together as teammates and friends."
Kahuku’s length on the perimeter and Harris’ interior presence made its 2-3 zone tough to penetrate for Moanalua (4-2). Kyrie McRaven led Na Menehune with a game-high 23 points, but open looks were few against the Red Raiders.
"They play a 2-3 zone like Syracuse does," Moanalua coach Byron Mello said. "They’re long. They take away angles. They challenge shots in the paint. They just made it really hard for us."
Kahuku jumped out to a 10-0 lead less than three minutes into the game and never trailed. McRaven led a 9-0 Moanalua run but Kahuku ended the first quarter with an 8-2 spurt punctuated by Brooke’s two-handed dunk off a drive down the lane with two seconds left.
"I think that sparked everyone," Brooke said.
Kahuku took a 31-19 lead into halftime and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way, opening a 52-30 cushion early in the fourth quarter. Moanalua went on a 14-2 run to cut the lead to 10 with 43 seconds left.
