U.S. Rep.-elect Tulsi Gabbard says she will apply for the vacancy in the U.S. Senate created by the death last week of U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye.
The deadline to apply for the vacancy is 5 p.m. today.
Gabbard, who was elected last month to represent Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, joins a list of about a dozen candidates including U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, Inouye’s personal choice to succeed him, Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz, and former Congressman Ed Case.
Candidates will get a chance to make their pitch to the state party’s central committee at a meeting on Wednesday.
The committee will forward three names to Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who will make the appointment.
