Former University of Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace’s condition has improved since he was hospitalized because of a stroke, friends say.
Wallace, 73, suffered a stroke in his Las Vegas home on Monday night. He was taken to Summerlin Hospital with no movement in his right extremities and unable to communicate verbally.
But on Tuesday, he regained movement in his right arm and leg, and was able to bring his knees up while resting on a bed.
He also was able to whisper one-word answers.
On Tuesday afternoon, Wallace, with assistance from a nurse and his nephew, took a short walk in the hospital corridor, a family friend said.
Wallace suffered what he termed a "minor stroke" while on Maui in November. He was released after spending a few days at War Memorial Hospital.
Wallace was UH’s head coach for 20 years before retiring at the end of the 2006-07 season.
Wallace and his wife, Joan, split time between Las Vegas and Honolulu.
Wallace is a consultant and special events host for Boyd Gaming. He also is chairman of the selection committee for the Collegeinsider.com Postseason Tournament.
