The Hawaii volleyball team went the distance but was undone by a controversial decision in a five-set loss to Long Beach State in the Pyramid on Friday night.
The scores were 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 27-29, 16-14.
The Warriors led 14-13 in the fifth set when 49ers outside hitter Taylor Crabb launched a shot that ricocheted out of bounds.
The UH players vehemently argued that the ball did not clear the net and should be ruled a fourth contact, which would award the point — and the match — to the Warriors. Instead, the official decided that a part of the ball hit UH’s triple block.
The ruling tied the score at 14.
Crabb then slammed a kill to make it 15-14.
Crabb and middle blocker Taylor Gregory teamed to block UH opposite attacker JP Marks at aloha ball.
The outcome of the Warriors’ fourth consecutive five-set match dropped their records to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The 49ers improved to 4-2 and 2-1.
The rematch is tonight.
Crabb, a Punahou School graduate, led the 49ers with 22 kills. Left-side hitter Dalton Ammerman contributed 11 kills. Middle blocker Colten Echave had 10 kills (against one error) in 16 swings.
The Warriors could have avoided the dramatic finish if they closed out the second set. The Warriors scored 10 unanswered points to take an 11-2 lead. Outside hitter Brook Sedore was the server for nine of those points.
But the 49ers managed to chip into their deficit. The 49ers tied it at 22, then went ahead on Ammerman’s thunderous kill.
The Warriors tied it at 23, but then the 49ers scored the final two points of the set. UH middle blocker Davis Holt, in a rare mistake, hit long for the 49ers’ 24th point. Echave’s ace gave the 49ers a 2-0 lead in sets.
The Warriors scored the final three points to win the third set. In the fourth set, the Warriors rallied from a 19-14 deficit to win in extra play.
In the fifth set, the Warriors fell behind 8-4 before again rallying.
Joby Ramos, a Roosevelt High graduate who played the previous two seasons at Pacific, was at the controls for the Warriors. He started his second consecutive match in place of Max Wechsung, who has been bothered by a tender shoulder.
Ramos was able to distribute the offense. Marks finished with 15 kills in a workmanlike 47 swings. He committed 13 errors.
Left-side hitter Sinisa Zarkovic added 14 kills.
Holt, a second-year freshman from Maryknoll School, produced the best match of his career. He had 13 kills in 22 swings, hitting .455. He also contributed to four of UH’s blocks.
