Youngsters can get some exercise and raise funds for school health programs at the Hawaii 5210 Let’s Go! Keiki Run on Feb. 15.
The 2-mile, untimed run is open to kids ages 12 and under, and their family, supporters and school staff. The route will take them from the Neal Blaisdell Center to McKinley High School and back.
A portion of the proceeds will go toward nutrition education and fitness programs at schools designated by the participants. Last year the top fundraising schools were Sacred Hearts Academy, Maemae Elementary, Liholiho Elementary, Hanalani Schools and Windward Nazarene Academy. Participants also receive a T-shirt, a healthy breakfast and entry into the Great Aloha Run fitness expo, which is held at Blaisdell.
"What’s really special about the run is that $15 of every registration goes right back to whatever school is indicated for their PE programs and play programs," said race coordinator Keala Peters. "It’s arming the schools for what they do best."
The race is part of the Hawaii 5210 Let’s Go Initiative, a program to remind children to have five or more fruits or vegetables a day, two hours or less of "screen time," one hour or more of physical activity, and no sugary beverages each day, Peters said.
Participants can register as individuals or as part of a school team. School teams should contact the race organizers at keikirun@gmail.com.
Online registration is possible until Feb. 5 for $22, and registration for individuals is possible for $25 on Feb. 8, when entry packets will be available for pickup from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Running Room, 819 Kapahulu Ave. (School groups pick up packets or register from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 9). Visit www.kahoomiki.org or call 800-581-7491, ext. 5, for details and registration forms.
