Motorists heading into Kailua town from Honolulu should brace for at least a week of delays and lane closures at the Windward community’s mauka entrance as crews work to repair a broken sewer pipe, officials said.
The broken pipe is believed to have touched off the formation of a sinkhole measuring about 20 feet long and 12 feet deep that collapsed part of the roadway at Hamakua Drive and Kailua Road early Friday morning.
Crews with private contractor Frank Coluccio Construction Co. will work around the clock on a project that’s estimated to take a week to fix the pipe, according to a city statement issued Monday. However, the work will require the closure of at least two lanes on Kailua Road, according to city officials.
Commuters during this past weekend reported significant traffic backups stemming from the sinkhole site. Honolulu Police Department officers are expected to be on site the entire time — and they’ll direct traffic there any time they encounter further backups this week — something that likely would take place during peak traffic hours, said Markus Owens, spokesman for Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services.
Meanwhile, a pump bypass will keep the area’s sewage flowing properly while the pipe is being repaired, city officials said.
In January, contractors working on a road project in Mililani discovered an 8-by-8-foot sinkhole on Makohilani Street between Kee- huhiwa and Hokuliilii streets.
