President’s sister joins Obama library foundation board
The "New Beginnings" town hall on education attracted parents, teachers, several Board of Education members and advocates last night at Kapiolani Community College. Keynote speaker Maya Soetoro-Ng addressed the crowd and encouraged people to think about how they can improve public education.
WASHINGTON >> The foundation tasked with selecting a location for President Barack Obama’s presidential library is adding Obama’s half-sister and one of his top former political advisers to its board of directors.
The additions of the president’s half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in Hawaii, and former adviser David Plouffe, a Washington D.C. resident, to the Barack Obama Foundation board as it is evaluating site proposals. The board hopes to announce a decision in early 2015.
Most often named library candidates are Honolulu, where Obama was born and raised, and Chicago where he worked and established his political base.
Other board members are Obama Chicago friend Martin Nesbitt, Chicago area businessman Kevin Poorman, and former Obama fundraising chief Julianna Smoot, who is shifting her role to direct the foundation’s fundraising.
