Surfers from Hawaii clinch national titles
Brisa Hennessy of Kailua won the explorer girls and explorer women’s divisions and the rookie of the year award at the NSSA national surfing championships on Saturday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Three others from Hawaii — Jackson Bunch (explorer super grom division), Axel Rosenblad (explorer SUP) and Richard Patey (super senior) — won national titles.
» The 14-year-old Hennessy and two others from Hawaii won their respective divisions at the Surfing America USA Championships at Trestles, Calif., on June 21.
Hennessy claimed the premier U-18 girls title and the Governors Cup; the North Shore’s Barron Mamiya, 14, won the boys U-14 title; and 11-year-old Eli Hanneman of Lahaina won the boys U-12 championship.
Hennessy clinched the U-18 girls division with a 15.43 heat. Florida’s 12-year-old Caroline Marks swept a record three divisions (U-12, U-14, U-16).
On the boys side, Mamiya won his heat with a 14.33 total, while Hanneman recorded the highest heat total of the entire event with an 18.97 during the U-12 final.
