Clutch performances by Hilo underclassmen made it a heartbreaking night for Roosevelt.
Junior Chailey Cabalis scored 18 points and sophomore Sharlei Graham-Bernisto added 13 as unseeded Hilo stunned fourth-seeded Roosevelt 62-61 in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Division I Girls Basketball State Championships on Saturday.
"We couldn’t save the day without all of us," Cabalis said. "Some of us were in foul trouble and that’s just something we have to work on."
They found each other often enough in a hectic third quarter, finding each other for five 3-point bombs to keep Hilo — probably the smallest team in the D-I tourney — in the game.
"I’m not surprised. I was feeling it and from the start, we were ready," Graham-Bernisto said. "We’ve been playing together since we were 9. The Keaukaha Lady Ballers."
Roosevelt trailed in the final four minutes, but got within one point and had the ball with 25 seconds left. But Devyn Kauhi’s layup attempt with three seconds left missed and the Vikings rebounded for the win.
"Back at the hotel, we talked about them starting off strong like (Friday) night, but I didn’t expect (Cabalis and Graham-Bernisto) to play as well as they did. You gotta give it to Roosevelt. They were the hottest team in the state coming into the state tournament," Hilo coach Ben Pana said. "At halftime, I told the girls we took Roosevelt’s biggest punch in the first half."
It was a gritty effort by the Viks, who had key rebounders Aliyah Pana, Alexis Pana and Shalyn Guthier in foul trouble early in the fourth quarter.
"I had them on the bench with about six minutes left. I told them this might be the last six minutes of the season," Pana said. "Us pressuring the ball made it tough for them to get a clean look late in the game. The girls played the game like it could be the last of their season. At the end, they played fundamental defense."
Hilo, the BIIF runner-up, will meet Lahainaluna on Friday.
Starr Rivera led OIA Red champion Roosevelt (15-3 overall) with 16 points and sophomore Ashley Kiko added 13 in a run-and-gun affair between two fast-breaking teams.

PUNAHOU 62, KING KEKAULIKE 34
Elle Uyeda scored 10 points in the first quarter as third-seeded Punahou ran away from King Kekaulike 62-34 in the first quarterfinal at Blaisdell Arena.
ILH champion Punahou (15-2 overall) will face Mililani on Friday at McKinley in the semifinal round.
Punahou’s fullcourt press and hot shooting turned the game into a runaway from the opening tip. The Buffanblu shot 11-for-18 from the field as coach Kevin Velasco began emptying his bench within the first eight minutes.
Uyeda made all four of her first-quarter shots, including two treys.
"She did well. She’s having some head cold, feeling sick, so I wanted to rest her as much as possible. She’s a tough kid," Velasco said. "I really enjoyed the way everybody’s giving their teammates the ball."
MIL runner-up King Kekaulike made a magnificent rally on Friday, coming back from a 17-point, second-half deficit to stun Moanalua. This time, there was no Cinderella run.
The Buffanblu led 38-20 at intermission, and despite a torrent of Punahou fouls to start the second half, they went on a 16-6 run to blow the game open.
