Vendors paid with fake bills on Big Island
Hawaii County police are warning about the use of counterfeit $50 bills in Hilo and Puna.
Several vendors at farmers markets in Hilo and Puna had received counterfeit bills, a man told police Wednesday.
Police say they have also received reports from other businesses in those districts.
The paper used for these counterfeit bills does not feel like genuine currency, and the printing on the back of the bills does not look sharp, police said.
Anyone who receives a counterfeit bill or has information about who is distributing them is asked to call the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
Potty trainer on trial for alleged abuse
WAILUKU » A 39-year-old Maui woman is on trial for alleged injuries to a toddler who attended her toilet-training "boot camp."
The Maui News reported Thursday a pediatrician testified Wednesday on the first day of the trial of Rebecca Stapp of Waiehu.
Stapp has pleaded not guilty to a charge of third-degree assault on the boy.
Pediatrician Norka Wilkinson testified that severe to moderate force would have been used to inflict injuries to the buttocks, thighs, lower back and groin area of the child.
The boy was about 17 months old when the pediatrician saw him May 2, 2013.
Stapp’s attorney, David Wiltsie, asked the doctor whether diaper rash could have caused what was shown in photographs presented by prosecutors.
Wilkinson said it didn’t look like diaper rash to her.
