Nearly 1 million pounds of shipwreck debris at the Palmyra Atoll and Kingman Reef national wildlife refuges has been removed to help rid the refuges’ coral reefs of invasive species. Crews hoist away part of the Hui Feng No. 1 shipwreck at Palmyra Atoll.

Remains from a teak fishing vessel were lifted out of the water and secured on a tug at Kingman Reef National Wildlife Refuge earlier this month. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spent $5.5 million to remove two shipwrecks from Palmyra and the fishing vessel at Kingman Reef as it began a restoration project to clear the refuges’ coral reefs of invasive species.
