A blistering second-half shooting performance powered Miami (Fla.) to a 73-58 win over Hawaii tonight in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Miami guard Durand Scott scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and went 4-for-5 from 3-point range after the break to lead the Hurricanes into the tournament semifinals.

Miami (8-1) faces No. 4 Arizona (10-0) in a semifinal game Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

UH (5-4) fell into the consolation bracket and plays East Tennessee State (2-8) at 4.

Hurricanes forward Julian Gamble finished with 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds. Point guard Shane Larkin contributed 12 points and three steals.

UH guard Brandon Jawato made four 3-pointers and led UH with a season-high 12 points off the bench. Center Vander Joaquim finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Miami jumped out to an 11-4 lead before UH’s bench sparked a 10-0 run with Jawato, Brandon Spearman and Davis Rozitis accounting for the scoring spurt after checking into the game.

Spearman knocked down a 3-pointer and Rozitis threw down a dunk off a lob from point guard Jace Tavita, who had also come off the bench. Jawato then hit a 3-pointer to give UH its first lead at 12-11 and Spearman added two free throws to cap the run.

There were two ties and five lead changes over the remainder of the first half before Miami took a 22-21 lead into the break.

The Hurricanes then hit 12 of their first 16 shots of the second half, including four of six 3-point attempts, to stretch the lead to 16.

Scott hit three from long range over a two-minute stretch, the last giving Miami a 53-37 lead with 11:19 left in the game.

The Hurricanes also forced six turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the half and converted them into 13 points. Miami shot 63 percent from the field in the second half while UH shot 52 percent, but couldn’t threaten the Hurricanes late.
