Alana Nuuanu knows, probably more than most, that it’s how you finish that counts more than how you start.
The reserve guard scored a team-high 14 points, including six crucial points in a row in the late going, to help Nanakuli edge Radford 38-36 on Friday night at James Alegre Gymnasium.
Nanakuli improved to 6-2 in the OIA West and Radford slipped to 6-2.
Nuuanu’s 3-point shot from the right wing put the visitors ahead 34-31 with 1:16 to go.
Radford’s Jasmine Moody (11 points, six rebounds) drove for a bucket in traffic to cut the lead to one, but missed the and-1 foul shot. The Golden Hawks then got a long 2 from the right wing from Nuuanu for a 36-33 lead with 45 seconds left.
"I had an adrenaline rush and I was confident," said Nuuanu, who started as a freshman. "My team had confidence in me."
Radford never led again, finishing 3-for-11 at the foul line during the final quarter. Nuuanu hit a foul shot for a four-point lead with 26 seconds left before Tanisha Elbourne (16 points, seven boards, three steals) hit a long 2 for Radford, cutting the lead to 37-35 with 17 seconds left.
Ciera O’Brien hit one of two free-throw attempts for a 38-35 lead with 9.6 seconds left. Radford freshman Salara Dill was fouled with 6.1 seconds remaining and hit the first of her two charity shots. She missed the second on purpose, leading to a wild scramble near the top of the key. O’Brien came up with the ball and veered away from defenders in the final seconds to run out the clock.
Nuuanu scored eight points in the final quarter and was a valuable asset as a zonebuster, particularly after Radford switched from man to a 2-3 zone.
"We tell the girls, if you’re open, take it," Nanakuli coach Randy Kauhane said. "Alana’s a sophomore and her confidence is getting back up."
Nanakuli’s full-court pressure was effective against the much taller Lady Rams. Radford shot a decent 43 percent from the field, but committed 26 turnovers. They also shot just 7-for-19 from the foul line.
"We had our chances," Rams coach Charles Chong said. "We needed to take better care of the ball and make our free throws, but we stayed pretty focused through the whole game and gave ourselves a chance to win. Hat’s off to Nanakuli. They’re well coached and they’ve got a good system."
Nanakuli shot just 24 percent from the field (12-for-50) and 9-for-21 from the foul line, but stayed with the Rams on the boards. Radford’s advantage there was just 26-25, and Nanakuli had just 14 turnovers.
