There wasn’t much scoring, but Kalaheo and Moanalua provided a whole lot of drama in the fourth quarter Saturday night.
Kalaheo managed just one field goal and five total points in the final period. But that ended up being just enough for the third-ranked Mustangs to pull out a 41-40 home win over No. 8 Moanalua.
"It was a bumpy ride; we were lucky to prevail, but we did," Kalaheo coach Alika Smith said.
Kalaheo led through most of the first three quarters until Moanalua guard Kahanu Pu‘ulei-Auld hit a 3-pointer to give Na Menehune a 37-36 lead with 1:59 left in the game. Moanalua’s advantage lasted about 30 seconds before Kalaheo guard Kupa‘a Harrison responded with a 3-pointer from the right wing to push the Mustangs ahead.
"The first few weeks I wasn’t looking for my shot a lot. But the last few weeks, Coach has been telling me, ‘If you’re open, shoot it instead of always passing,’" said Harrison. "(Kalaheo guard) Josh (Ko) made a good drive and I was open and it was in rhythm."
Moanalua twice closed to within a single point in the final 1:04 and Kalaheo twice missed the front end of 1-and-1 opportunities. But Moanalua couldn’t get the ball to drop in the final seconds and Kalaheo survived.
"We talked about it being a one-possession-type game at the end, that’s what we wanted it to be," Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said. "But you have to make plays."
Kalaheo ended up making one more play than Moanalua to improve to 2-0 in the OIA East, while Na Menehune fell to 1-1.
Shem Sukumaran and Derick Morgan led Kalaheo with nine points each. Eliet Donley’s 11 points paced Moanalua.
Neither team was sharp from the field in the first half and Kalaheo took a 22-16 lead into the break.
The Mustangs led 36-32 entering the fourth quarter, but missed their first three shots and committed three turnovers before Pu‘ulei-Auld drove in for a layup and knocked down his lone 3-pointer of the game to give Moanalua the lead. Kalaheo then worked the ball to Harrison, who drilled a 3-pointer.
After Donley hit one of two free throws, the Mustangs missed a shot inside, but Harrison grabbed the rebound and got the ball to Morgan, who then connected on both of his free throws to give Kalaheo a 41-38 lead.
Ola Brown knocked down two shots from the line with 33 seconds left to bring Moanalua to within a point. Kalaheo then missed front ends twice, with Donley grabbing a rebound off the second attempt with 7 seconds left. Na Menehune, who were out of timeouts, got the ball to Pu‘ulei-Auld in the frontcourt, but he couldn’t get a clean look at the basket in the final seconds.
