The wee hours of Feb. 10 is when Las Vegas’ next implosion — the first since the New Frontier went down in 2007 — will take place. The target is the Clarion, on Convention Center Drive just east of the Strip, which has been closed since last August. The original plan called for the implosion to take place last week, but it was delayed to accommodate a preparatory manual demolition.
The casino-hotel with 193 rooms had a nearly 45-year run as the Royal Inn, Royal Americana, Paddlewheel, Greek Isles and, most notably, Debbie Reynolds Hollywood. A completely new resort is reportedly planned.
Garage closed: The parking garage at the downtown Las Vegas Club has closed. It’s the latest part of the property to be shut down, following restaurants and the hotel last year. Only the casino continues to operate.
Pool remodel: Also downtown, the Golden Nugget is upgrading its pool area, which means the complex won’t be open as usual for lounging (the pool isn’t heated in the winter) until Jan. 23. GN has two pools: the famous Tank, with its slide that runs through a shark aquarium, and the Hideout above it.
Country stars add dates: With the first three announced June performances for the collaboration of Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn at Caesars Palace sold out, new dates for June have been added. "Reba, Brooks & Dunn: Together in Vegas" will play three additional dates on June 17, 19 and 20, with tickets starting at $59.50 now on sale.
Buffet twofer: Get a 2-for-1 buffet or 50 percent off for single diners at the Silverton on Thursdays in January. Simply join the players club and print out the necessary coupon at a casino kiosk to get this good deal.
QUESTION: I used to play low-stakes blackjack at Slots A Fun on the Strip. Is it still operating?
ANSWER: Yes, but the table games were removed a couple of years ago. There are still plenty of slots (natch!) and an unadvertised happy hour at the bar daily from 3 to 5 p.m., with all draft beers for $1.08.
