Sea Warriors snap skid in basketball
Malte Ziegenhagen scored 21 points and Darry Jones Jr. added 12 to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 64-51 win over Notre Dame de Namur in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Moanalua High.
The Sea Warriors (13-11, 8-10 PacWest) hit six 3-pointers, four by Ziegenhagen, in snapping a five-game losing streak. NDNU dropped to 7-17 and 6-12.
» Behind Kiran Shastri’s 24 points, Chaminade routed Holy Names 101-83 at McCabe Gym. Kuany Kuany added 14 points and Lee Bailey 13 for the Silverswords (15-11, 12-6) against the Hawks (5-21, 4-14).
» Scott Friel scored 17 points with 11 assists as Brigham Young-Hawaii rolled past Fresno Pacific 106-71 at Cannon Activities Center. Pablo Coro came off the bench for 17 points, with four of the team’s 13 3-pointers for the Seasiders (13-11, 11-7) against the Sunbirds (11-14, 6-11).

» Dannalynn Hooper scored 25 points and Bry Tatupu-Leopoldo added 20 with four 3-pointers, but it was not enough as Brigham Young-Hawaii fell to Fresno Pacific 85-79 in double overtime at Cannon Activities Center.
Jenay Herring scored 18 points to lead the Sunbirds (10-13, 10-7). FPU outscored the Seasiders (2-21, 2-16) 11-5 in the second overtime, with all of BYUH’s points coming on free throws by Tatupu-Leopoldo.
» Ieva Nagy scored 19 points, hitting four of Hawaii Pacific’s 12 3-pointers, as the Sea Warriors (15-9, 11-7) pulled away from Notre Dame de Namur (5-19, 4-14) 87-63 at Moanalua High.
» Lilia Maio scored 19 points and Kristle Henry added 16, but Chaminade (3-21, 3-15 PacWest) could not hold on, falling to Holy Names (10-4, 5-12) 69-53 at McCabe Gym.
Cal wins rain-shortened Burns golf
California was declared the winner of the 38th John A. Burns Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament after Saturday’s final round was canceled due to inclement weather on Kauai.
The Golden Bears finished with a two-day 560 at Wailua Golf Course to win their fourth consecutive Burns title. Texas A&M and BYU tied for second at 569.
Host Hawaii’s A team finished 13th (590), Hawaii B tied for 14th (597) and Hawaii Hilo took 17th (602).
BYU’s Justin Keiley of Maui took medalist honors at 134. Defending champion Joel Stalter of Cal was second at 138.
Sea Warriors earn split in baseball
Keanu Kapana’s run-scoring single in the top of the ninth proved to be the game-winner as Hawaii Pacific opened PacWest baseball play with a 2-1 victory over Fresno Pacific in the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader in Fresno, Calif.
The Sunbirds (6-5, 1-1) came back to earn the split 5-4 in the nightcap that also went nine innings, handing the Sea Warriors (6-1, 1-1) their first loss of the season with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Vulcans sweep Seasiders in softball
Ashley Nelson scattered four hits and struck out 10, and Hannah Peterson followed with a three-hitter as Hawaii Hilo shut out Brigham Young-Hawaii 4-0 and 8-0 in six innings in a PacWest softball doubleheader Saturday at the UHH field.
Rebecca Lee was 4-for-7 with three RBIs for the Vulcans (8-7, 3-3 PacWest) against the Seasiders (0-6, 0-4)
Robinson, Oda at Quarterback Club
Former Hawaii basketball player Geremy Robinson, president and owner of OpenCourt Basketball, and Star-Advertiser photographer Dennis Oda are the featured speakers at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Maple Garden restaurant on Isenberg Street. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon. Lunch is $15.
