Try as it might, the Hawaii women’s basketball team could not extend its winning streak in hostile territory.
The Rainbow Wahine cured a first-half turnover bug but could not quite catch up to Pacific in the second period, falling 71-61 in Stockton, Calif., on Thursday at the Spanos Center.
A three-game UH winning streak ended despite 18 points apiece from junior forward Kamilah Martin and junior wing Shawna Kuehu.
"We just did not show up focused, and didn’t have the energy needed to match their effort on defense," UH coach Laura Beeman said in a postgame phone interview. "Literally there were times where we were just giving them the ball."
Kuehu tied her career high on 8-for-15 shooting. The last of her baskets brought UH within 67-61 with 45 seconds to play, but the Wahine had to foul and got no closer.
The Wahine (7-9, 3-2 Big West) now prepare to take on UC Davis (6-9, 1-3) at noon on Saturday. The Aggies upset league leader Cal State Northridge 61-46 on Thursday.
UH committed 21 of its 27 turnovers against heavy pressure by the Tigers (13-3, 3-1) in the first half, yet somehow still trailed by only eight at halftime by making 10 of 16 field goals and 11 of 13 free throws in the period.
"The first half, we played so poorly and were down eight. It just seemed like we would get going a little bit and blow a defensive assignment. Or we would turn the ball over," Beeman said. "It was one of those games where if we just show up and play, we never get that far behind and we’re not playing that catch-up."
The Wahine got within five points early in the second half, but couldn’t put together a run. They trailed by 10 with five minutes remaining.
Kuehu hit two baskets in a row to make it 57-49 with 4:54 remaining. Monica DeAngelis made one of two technical free throws with 4:03 left to make it a six-point game.
UH fell behind by 11 again, but DeAngelis sank a 3-pointer to make it 65-59 with 1:03 left. Ashleigh Karaitiana drew a charge on the ensuing inbounds play, but the Wahine could not capitalize.
Kendall Rodriguez sank five 3-pointers among her 18 points to lead the Tigers.
UH took a 10-7 lead on a Martin layup, but Pacific went on a 20-2 run to go up 27-12.
The Wahine scored eight straight to get within seven points, but another spate of turnovers reversed the momentum again.
Vicky Tagalicod (nine points) hit a pair of free throws to end the first half, making it 40-32 Pacific at the break.
