McGerity wins fourth straight state title
Taylor John McGerity produced a rare four-peat Sunday at the King Auto Group 12-under State Championships, run by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association.
McGerity, a seventh-grader, won the 7-10 division his past two years in that age group and has now captured the 11-12 division the past two. He opened with a 3-under-par 69 Saturday at Hawaii Prince’s B and C nines, then fired 70 Sunday. He won by four over Kona Kashiwagi, who also placed second last year.
Jennifer Koga defended her 11-12 title in the girls division, shooting 73 Sunday to overtake Millburn Ho and win by six shots. Koga had a two-day total of 150.
Minny Byun (77–157) and Go Nakatsukasa (69–143) won the 7-10 divisions.
The King Auto Group 13-18 State Championships are July 1-2 at The Club at Hokulia.
Williams to play in U.S. Senior Open
Doug Williams, who reached the semifinals of last week’s Manoa Cup, won Hawaii’s spot at this year’s U.S. Senior Open Monday.
Williams and Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer David Ishii both shot 1-under-par 71 at the Sectional Qualifier at Waialae Country Club. Williams’ two-putt par on the first sudden-death hole gave him a place at the Open, July 10-13 at Oak Tree National Golf Club in Edmond, Okla.
Ishii is the first alternate and Kevin Hayashi, another Hall of Famer, is second alternate after shooting 72. There were 43 golfers in the field.
