Plum-picking season and hunting season for feral cattle and goats get underway this month on state land in Kokee and Waimea on Kauai.
Permits to harvest plums at Kokee State Park are available at the park’s headquarters. There is no cost, but forms must be completed and dropped in the box after harvesting.
Each person will be allowed to take up to 5 pounds of plums per day for personal consumption.
Archery goat hunting will be allowed on weekends and state holidays from July 19 to Dec. 28.
The limit is two feral goats per hunter per day. Animals may be deboned in the field.
Access is through State Highway 550 and Menehune Road in Waimea Valley. Hunters will be required to check in and out at the check stations at Waimea Valley, Waimea Heights, Mango Tree or Kokee.
The feral cattle control hunting program in the Puu Ka Pele Forest Reserve will end Aug. 28.
Permits will be limited and issued on a first-come, first-served basis from the land department branch office at 3060 Eiwa St. in Lihue.
Hunters must present their 2014-15 license to acquire their permit. Fifty permits will be issued per three-day slot. Bag limit is two feral cattle per permit.
The three hunting day slots are Tuesday through Thursday, July 22-24 and 29-31, and Aug. 5-7, 12-14, 19-21 and Aug. 26-28.
Cattle may be deboned in the field, but the tail must be kept for identification.
