Man charged after wild ride with school bus
A man who allegedly took a yellow school bus on a drunken ride on Hana Highway before crashing it has been charged with several offenses.
Maui police said Otto W.K. Wolf Gramm Jr., 19, of Hana was released on $3,000 bail Saturday.
A witness reported seeing the bus careening northbound on the highway near Baldwin Beach Park at about 11:30 Friday night.
An officer attempted to stop the bus, but it sped off and the officer ended the pursuit. The bus later crashed into a utility pole near Kaiholo Place in Paia.
The driver fled on foot, but witnesses called police after spotting the suspect, and police arrested Gramm.
The accident closed Hana Highway as crews repaired the utility pole and cleared lines blocking both lanes.
Police said Monday that Gramm was charged with unauthorized control of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving, causing an accident involving damage, and not possessing a commercial driver’s license.
