As of this past weekend, two of Kahuku’s three imports from New Zealand are making a big impact.
Senior center Hyrum Harris has been a force as a rebounder, passer and savvy all-around player. His 6-foot-5 and 250-or-so pounds make him a difficult foe to move for any defender. Another senior post, 6-7 Denhym Brooke, has been a very efficient contributor. Brooke doesn’t look to shoot much, though he has 3-point range and a nice shooting stroke. He offers Kahuku plenty as a rebounder, shot blocker and finisher on the fast break.
Harris had seven points and 12 rebounds in a win over then-No. 2 Farrington on Saturday. Brooke finished with 14 points and eight boards.
The third Kiwi, Tama Green, is standing by. He was listed as a junior when he and Harris were at Maryknoll two seasons ago. Harris was listed as a sophomore that year.
Kahuku coach Alan Akina believes that there is confusion because the New Zealand education system (forms) uses a different format than Hawaii (years) does. According to Akina, Green began high school in 2011, which should make him a senior now.
Until administrators at Kahuku feel secure about the paperwork, Green waits.
"The league is self-reporting. We don’t have an investigation process," OIA executive director Raymond Fujino said. "But I would be careful. I spoke to the athletic director (Gillian Yamagata) and said to check on him, make sure you have the proper documentation."
