Wahine basketball team falls 62-60 at Cal Poly

A Big West Conference regular-season title will be difficult to attain for the Hawaii women’s basketball team after the Rainbow Wahine fell 62-60 at leader Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., today.

UH (11-10, 5-4 Big West) completed its four-game, 11-day road trip with a 1-3 mark. Cal Poly (14-8, 8-1) extended its lead over third-place UH to three games with seven to play, and the Mustangs own the tiebreaker thanks to their home-and-home sweep of the Wahine.

Laura Beeman’s team trimmed an 11-point second-half deficit to one when Kamilah Jackson went to her left hand to make it 58-57 with 47 seconds left.

Jackson blocked a layup attempt out of bounds, but Poly guard Ariana Elegado (25 points) stuck a floater with 19 seconds left on the inbounds play.

Coming out of a timeout, UH center Pua Kailiawa was long on a tying 3-point attempt. Elegado grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made both for a five-point lead with four seconds to go.

UH’s Destiny King hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

Jackson and Shawna Kuehu led the Wahine with 14 points apiece in the loss.
