Two state House committees are holding a weekend hearing to consider several bills that would change the Public Land Development Corp., including a bill to repeal the agency.

The joint hearing by the water and land, education and finance committees was being held today to help encourage people from neighbor islands to testify.

The agency established in 2011 has come under heavy public scrutiny from people who believe the agency’s powers are too broad, touching land over land all over the islands. The Hawaii State Association of Counties — a group made up of all the county councils and mayors in the state — voted to get rid of the agency in October.

Community members demonstrated against the agency when the Legislature opened its session last month.
