Ogilvy scores ace at No. 4
Australian Geoff Ogilvy had the first ace of 2015 in Thursday’s opening round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Making his first start of the year at last week’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions, the 2006 U.S. Open winner needed the hole-in-one to finish in red numbers. He had a
1-under 69 and trailed leaders Paul Casey and Webb Simpson by seven shots.
Ogilvy said it was his first ace on the PGA Tour. He has managed more than he can count in Australia. Using a 5-iron on the 211-yard No. 4 hole, Ogilvy didn’t win a new car, but can perhaps look back at that shot and say it was the reason he made the cut.
Another day, another good round
Jason Day has the distinction of being the top-ranked golfer in the field at No. 8 worldwide and played like it during Thursday’s opening round to shoot a 4-under 66. Coming off a third-place finish on Monday, Day left a few out there, but was pleased with his performance.
"I had three lipouts on the way in, but yeah, it was good," Day said. "I gave myself some opportunities out there again, and definitely coming off the form from last week. I’m confident in the way I’m playing now."
Day closed with an 11-under 62 at Kapalua where he tied the tournament record. And while he wasn’t as hot out there on Thursday as he was Monday, you try not to compare how you do from one day to the next.
"No, you know what, I played wonderfully out there today," Day said. "I think I hit about 14 greens, missed a few with a couple of wedges, but other than that, I feel really good about where everything is."
Inside the numbers
There were seven bogey-free rounds, including one by local amateur Kyle Suppa. Camilo Villegas had the best bogey-free round at 63 and Suppa had the worst at 69.
The scoring average was 69.507 with 69 golfers landing in red figures and 93 shooting even par or better. First-round leaders Paul Casey and Webb Simpson will try to match what Ryan Palmer did in 2010 — finish in first after leading the first round. Simpson has never won a tournament after seizing the lead the first day.
Defending champion Jimmy Walker is 42 under in his past nine competitive rounds in Hawaii. He finished 17 under to win this event last year and was 21 under in his four rounds at last week’s second-place finish at Hyundai. He was 4 under in his opening round here on Thursday.
Despite shooting a stellar 63, Villegas hit only five of 14 fairways and 14 greens in regulation. He is making his third start here, including one where he was paired with Michelle Wie the first two days, and his first since missing the cut in 2011.
