A 31-year-old Japanese visitor who was allegedly thrown off a 15-foot cliff on Kauai has been upgraded to stable condition from critical condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, a county spokeswoman said.
The woman from Fukuoka prefecture was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after Justin Wynn Klein, 37, allegedly threw her off a cliff near Kalalau Beach.
Kauai County spokeswoman Sarah Blane said police are continuing their search for Klein. CrimeStoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information on his whereabouts that would lead to his arrest. Blane said police have been receiving tips from the public and are following up on all leads.
Consul Kenji Endo of the Japan Consulate General’s office in Honolulu accompanied the hiker’s mother to Kauai after she arrived Wednesday morning from Japan. Endo said the victim has been able to talk with her mother.
At this time the hiker has no recollection of what happened.
The 31-year-old woman is expected to stay at the hospital for another week. Endo said her mother appreciates the assistance extended by police, the prosecutor’s office and hospital staff. The consulate general’s office will continue to provide assistance to the family.
