Oregon, Ohio, clarifying its allegiance before championship
TOLEDO, Ohio >> The mayor of the Ohio city of Oregon says it won’t be changing its name, even though the city is still backing the Ohio State Buckeyes when they face Oregon in college football’s championship game next Monday.
The name debate began after two Ohioans started a petition calling for the city near Toledo to temporarily change its name
Mayor Mike Seferian says the city now plans to issue a proclamation declaring it “Ohio State Buckeye week” in the city of Oregon.
But he tells WTVG-TV in Toledo that there’s no need to change the city’s name to show its loyalty.
After all, he says, the Oregon in Ohio got its name in 1838. That’s 21 years before the other Oregon became a state.
