The Hawaii Tourism Authority, the state’s tourism agency, will hand out about $3.3 million in grants to 156 programs and events statewide.
"Hawaii is a destination like no other in the world and our Product Enrichment Program highlights different ways in which our community comes together to make our home a better place for both residents and visitors to enjoy," Ronald Williams, HTA chief executive officer, said in a news release Thursday. "These programs not only highlight the unique experiences found across the state, but also support the perpetuation of our host culture and the sustainability of our vast natural resources."
Since 2003 the HTA has provided at least $1 million each year to support efforts that manage, improve and protect Hawaii’s natural environment and areas. This time around, one of the larger awardees was Juniroa Productions Inc., which received $66,000 to produce two episodes of its "Family Ingredients" television show. The Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services and The Estria Foundation received $50,000. Leadership Kauai was awarded $49,000, while the Trust for Public Land was given $44,000.
Receiving $25,000 each were the Big Island Film Festival LLC, Big Island Resource Conservation and Development Council, the University of Hawaii Office of Research, the Kai ‘Opua Canoe Club, Kailua Village Business Improvement District and Hawaii Horse Owners Inc.
HTA’s Product Enrichment Program, which has elements going back to 2002, is designed to enhance the visitor experience, create new economic development opportunities, provide for natural resources management and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.
