1 dead, 1 hurt in 2 incidents on Hana beach
Maui firefighters and paramedics responded to two separate incidents at Red Sand Beach in Hana.
The first incident happened at 11:30 a.m. Saturday when a 50-year-old man who was hiking with his wife fell 15 feet from the trail that leads to the beach. He suffered a broken arm and head trauma, Maui officials said.
The man was airlifted to the Hana ballfield and then medevaced to the hospital. His condition was unknown, officials said.
In the second incident, a 64-year-old man suffered a heart attack around 2:30 p.m. while at the beach. He died at the scene.
His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.
Lava flow front remains stalled near market
PAHOA, Hawaii » Lava threatening a marketplace in Pahoa hasn’t moved since Friday. According to Hawaii County Civil Defense, the front remains stalled.
After an overflight of the flow Sunday, the leading edge remained 0.5 mile away from Highway 130 and Pahoa Village Road intersection and 660 yards from Pahoa Marketplace.
Surface breakouts and activity along both margins continue upslope of the flow front but do not pose an immediate threat to residents, Civil Defense said.
Water service restored for Kapaa residents
Water service was restored Sunday to customers in Kapaa, Kauai, after the county Water Department completed repairs on a water main.
The break earlier Sunday cut off water along Kuhio Highway from Aleka Loop to Kamoa Road, including the connecting Pouli Road.
