In the duel between speed and size, the Roosevelt Rough Riders simply ran away with the championship.
Seventh-ranked Roosevelt got 17 points and nine rebounds from sophomore Keala Quinlan en route to a 62-44 win over No. 3 Mililani to capture the OIA Red girls basketball championship on Wednesday night.
Roosevelt took command with a 19-0 run midway through the game.
A rowdy crowd of about 1,000 saw Roosevelt finish league play with a perfect 13-0 record. The Rough Riders, with 11 points from Sharice Kawakami and Starr Rivera and 10 more from Tavae Sina Sofa, brought coach Hinano Higa her first OIA crown.
"It’s awesome. They were hungry and they got it done," Higa said. "The (shooting) incident (on campus Tuesday) affected a lot of our girls, but they knew what they had to do and get ready for a championship game."
Quinlan is more of a stretch 5 than a pure low-post player, which made for an interesting matchup with Mililani’s elite post, Sarah Liva.
"We made her work hard, tried to push her out a little bit," said Quinlan, a 5-foot-10 post with 3-point range. "I saw in other games she doesn’t like to come out (defensively) so much, and I like to shoot it."
Higa had a ton of concern about the Mililani center.
"Sarah is tough. We wanted to stop her from dominating inside," Higa said. "Credit to her and her teammates."
Liva finished with 19 hard-earned points and 10 rebounds, facing constant double- and triple-teams.
Roosevelt last won the OIA title under Bobby Keanini in 2007. Keanini guided the program to two Red crowns and a White title.
This team did it with breakaway plays in transition, particularly off Mililani turnovers. The Trojans lost for the first time in league play after 12 wins. Mikaela Limper added 13 points, but for the most part, Mililani was swarmed all night by Roosevelt’s double-teaming man-to-man defense.
"Composure is key. You can’t hold it for just two quarters against good teams," Mililani coach Patrick Basilio said. "When it starts snowballing against you, it’s almost contagious. Roosevelt is so relentless."
The Rough Riders trailed 24-17 late in the first half, but scored 10 unanswered points to close the half and take the lead. Quinlan opened the second half with a hustling follow shot and Kawakami went coast to coast for a layup as Roosevelt surged to a 36-24 lead.
They extended the lead to 45-29 on a floater by Sofa, but Mililani recharged and went on an 11-2 run. After Limper swished a trey and Liva hit a foul shot, the Trojans were within 47-40 with 6:56 remaining.
From there, Mililani went cold as Roosevelt went on a 15-0 run, opening the lead to 62-40 with 3:55 left.
Now Roosevelt won’t have to travel for the first weekend of the state tourney. Two of the sites are set for the neighbor islands, hosted by the BIIF and MIL.
"It’s nice to stay home. I’m glad we got this ‘W.’ Lahainaluna, Konawaena and Punahou are tough, and we’re pretty close to them. We’ll take whatever seeding we get," Higa said.
