While the days of racing for pineapples, chickens and even suckling pig have given way to competing for trophies and medals, it is evident that Hui Nalu’s outrigger canoe paddlers still compete at the highest level when participating in and hosting their regatta more than a century after Hui Nalu was formed.
Hui Nalu used a consistent all-around performance to claim the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association’s John D. Kaupiko Regatta held Sunday in the calm waters of Kaneohe Bay just off Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The annual regatta is named after Lukela Kaupiko, an experienced waterman who coached Hui Nalu beginning in the 1930s and was given the nickname "John D." by beach boys comparing him to John D. Rockefeller; as it was explained in accounts provided by the club, Kaupiko was always well dressed and drove a nice car.
The winning effort netted Hui Nalu its third AAA Division (27-39 crews entered) title of the season and it notched the overall regatta win with 172 points stemming from 11 race victories. Hui Nalu held off Kailua (167 points), Outrigger (148 points) and Lanikai (124 points) in the large division.
"This is our race, so of course you want to do well," said Lita Blankenfeld after steering Hui Nalu’s women’s 60 crew to victory and continuing the team’s undefeated season in the event. "It was important because, mentally, we were going into a bit of a slump. It has been a long season, so it was important for our crew to get back together."
Blankenfeld was joined in the 1/2-mile race by Christine Gibson, Lurline McGregor, Katie Scott, Diane Warncke and Teresa Lathrop as the crew crossed the line in 4 minutes, 43.32 seconds — 4.5 seconds ahead of Keahiakahoe.
Hui Nalu’s senior women also continued their undefeated run, as the crew of Tayte Brock, Denise Darval-Chang, Donna Kahakui, Claire Townsend, Violet Carrillo and Tia Brown navigated the 1.5-mile course in 12:55.52 and breezed by Lanikai (13:46.51) and Hui Lanakila (13:46.89).

Through 28 races, Hui Nalu established a slim 116-109-107 advantage over Kailua and Outrigger. Seven races later, Hui Nalu had extended its margin over Kailua to nine points, 147-138. It then won the next two events and built a large enough margin to hold off Kailua’s comeback attempt.
Defending OHCRA champion Hui Nalu and Kailua — winner of four consecutive OHCRA titles prior to Hui Nalu’s triumph last year — entered Sunday’s competition having notched two victories and two runner-up finishes apiece through the organization’s first five regattas. Lanikai won the annual Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta on July 4, but the event is considered an exhibition and race results do not count toward the clubs’ cumulative point standings.
In addition to battling for gold in individual races, crews aimed to qualify for the state championship regatta scheduled for Aug. 2 at Keehi Lagoon. The top four crews from each OHCRA event earn automatic berths in the state race based on the season-long standings.
"What we try to do now is just work a little harder every day, and strive to get better," Blankenfeld said. "Everybody’s trying hard. The season’s coming to an end with states and we can still improve our conditioning, technique — it just takes time, but we’re all happy to be out here."
Keahiakahoe dominated the AA Division (14-26 crews entered) competition with 70 points and Hui Lanakila claimed the A Division (1-13 crews entered) trophy with 41 points.
The venue provided a change of scenery for the regatta that was held at Keehi Lagoon until returning to the base three seasons ago after a two-decade-long absence. Paddlers raced along a course running parallel to both a pier used by the Marines for loading jet fuel and a major runway used by military aircraft. Unlike other windward venues utilized by OHCRA — Kailua and Waimanalo beaches — the waters of Kaneohe Bay are protected by the base’s peninsula, and allowed for uniform calm conditions across all lanes of the race course, which is regarded by many paddlers as one of the fairest in the state.
Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa’a returns to Keehi Lagoon on Saturday for the organization’s championship regatta, while OHCRA is slated to hold its championship at Keehi on Sunday. Following the weekend’s championship regattas, both organizations take a week off before returning to Keehi for the state competition.
