Michele Nagamine is hoping some complementary pieces will complete the puzzle in 2014.
Two local players were among the five incoming freshmen signed this week by the Hawaii soccer coach for the fall season. Homegrown attackers Sonest Furtado of Waianae and Kiani Halushka of Kamehameha add to a solid core of players up front already expected to contribute for Nagamine’s fourth season.
"They’re both kids I’ve known for a very long time on a personal level through (Le’ahi) club soccer," Nagamine said. "I just had a chance to watch them grow and develop. They’ve become very, very big impact players on both their club and high school teams. Both of them have a nose for the goal."
UH SOCCER SIGNEES >> Danielle Crawford, 5-4 MF/D, Moses Lake, Wash. >> Sonest Furtado, 5-5 F, Waianae (Waianae HS) >> Kiani Halushka, 5-4 F, Honolulu (Kamehameha HS) >> Spenser Jaye, 5-4 MF, San Ramon, Calif. >> Paige Okazaki, 5-7 D, El Dorado Hills, Calif. |
On the defensive side, UH lost three of its four defensive starters over the past four seasons in Male Fresquez, Karli Look and Chelsea Miyake.
One of the biggest gets of the class might be 5-foot-7 center back Paige Okazaki of El Dorado Hills, Calif., whom the team discovered while on a road trip to UC Davis last season.
"I was looking for the next Chelsea Miyake," Nagamine said. "Someone who could come in and give us a little bit of a size presence. Someone who is good in the air, someone who is going to be able to cover the ground up and back, and also Chelsea had that big booming kick and was able to send balls in from 45-yard range. And Paige Okazaki does that perfectly. I actually called her ‘Baby Chelsea Miyake’ when I saw her."
Nagamine is hopeful Okazaki will mesh well with the team’s only returning starting defender, Lidia Battaglia.
The other two additions add depth at midfield — Danielle Crawford of Moses Lake, Wash., and Spenser Jaye of San Ramon, Calif.
UH went 8-8-1 in 2013, including 3-4-1 in the Big West. The Rainbow Wahine narrowly missed out on the four-team conference tournament.
