Kala’i Santos banked in a 74-foot shot at the buzzer as No. 2 Punahou rallied to edge No. 3 Saint Louis 59-58 on Wednesday night at McCabe Gymnasium.
A stunned crowd of about 500 watched as Punahou chipped away at a 13-point deficit in the second half. Saint Louis led most of the way, but Punahou got the ball back with no time outs left and 1.7 seconds to play.
Down 58-56, Santos took an inbounds pass in the backcourt from Micah Ma’a and immediately launched a running shot — not a throw — that banked home. He was rewarded moments later with a big kiss on the cheek from his girlfriend.
Dayson Watanabe had 14 points, while Santos and J.B. Kam added 12 each for Punahou, which improved to 3-0 in ILH play. Ihaka Johnson scored 15 points, Drew Kobayashi had 13, and Jimmy Nunuha III and Jaymason Nunuha added 11 each as Saint Louis (2-1).
Santos said he’s made long shots before while he and his teammates have long-shot contests before practice. Nothing like this, though, has happened in a game.
"I just play throughout the game to the final horn," the senior guard said.

Coach Darren Matsuda had told his team at practice that if nobody’s open downcourt, just get the ball in and at least get a shot off. The Buffanblu had been in a similar scenario a few weeks ago against Kalaheo. They were down one point when their pass went deep and was intercepted in the final few seconds.
"We’re trying to practice a lot of game situations because the ILH is so tough this year. Mid-Pac beat Maryknoll tonight," Matsuda said. "The week was a tough one for these guys with finals. Mentally and physically, we were fatigued and we saw that in the third quarter. We kept plugging away in the fourth quarter. These guys have known each other for a long time and it worked out for us."
For nearly the entire contest, Saint Louis was in control. Punahou had leads of 3-0 and 6-3 at the start, but had trouble cracking the Crusaders’ man-to-man defense consistently.
Despite five 3-pointers by Punahou in the first half, Saint Louis had a 26-22 lead at the break thanks to an 8-0 run. The third quarter was all Crusaders, who outscored the Buffanblue 14-5 to lead 40-27 heading into the final period.
Then a flurry of missed shots against Punahou’s fullcourt pressure turned the momentum. Punahou, which had eight of its 18 turnovers in the third quarter, played loose and shot lights out in the fourth quarter, going on a 9-2 run. Watanabe swished two foul shots and drove for a bucket as the Buffanblu got within 42-36 with less than 5 minutes to play.
Saint Louis’ patient offense fared better in the fourth quarter, and the lead was 49-42 after Jaymason Nunuha scored a layup off a pass from Jimmy Nunuha with 1:27 to go. But Ma’a hit a layup and a baseline jumper to bring the Buffanblu within 50-46, and after Jordan Tanuvasa swished a corner 3, they were within 52-49 as Matsuda burned his final time out with 35 seconds left.
A free throw by Jaymason Nunuha pushed the lead to 55-51 with 23 ticks left, but Watanabe answered with two foul shots to cut the margin to two points with 16.5 seconds remaining.
Ihaka Johnson nailed two foul shots with 12.2 seconds to go, giving Saint Louis a 57-53 lead.
That seemed to be the final nail in the coffin for Punahou. But Kam got open on the right wing and hit the 3 to bring Punahou within 57-56 with less than 6 seconds left.
Jaymason Nunuha inbounded to Johnson, who was fouled with 1.7 seconds left. He missed the first free-throw attempt, and then made the second for a 58-56 lead.
Then came Ma’a’s pass to Santos and the craziest end to a game so far this season in prep hoops.
