Police have opened a livestock theft and cruelty to animal investigation after two goats were reported stolen and two others injured this week.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the incident occurred either late Sunday night or early Monday morning at Waiahole farm. Police did not provide information about the animals’ injuries.

The incident marks the second goat theft case within the past several months. In September, two men allegedly stole 23 goats from a Kahuku farm using duct tape to keep the animals quiet.

Sherwin Mitchell, 24, of Waianae, and Shannon Chun, 24, of Mililani, are slated to be tried on felony charges of livestock theft on Feb. 18.

The two men are free after each posting $11,000 bond.

Theft of livestock is a class C felony that carries a minimum fine of $1,000 or restitution, whichever is greater.

The goats, which were never recovered, were allegedly taken sometime between Sept. 19 and 20 from Kahuku Goat Farms. The owners said their livestock was valued at several thousand dollars.
