Surf picks up as trades ease
Large surf is expected on the east and north shores of the islands this weekend, but the tradewinds and accompanying tradewind showers will diminish, forecasters said Thursday.
A high-surf advisory for east-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island, with 6- to 10-foot faces, will probably be extended into the weekend due to a north swell, a National Weather Service lead forecaster said. It was set to expire at 9 this morning.
The tradewinds will slowly diminish from 15 to 25 mph Thursday down to 10 to 20 mph for the weekend, turning southeasterly Sunday.
The north swell will also bring large but not advisory-level surf of 7 to 10 feet to north shores starting this afternoon.
Church ends elementary school
Our Redeemer Lutheran Church will close its preschool-through-sixth-grade school after the 2012-13 school year, the church announced Thursday.
However, the church said its Lutheran High School will be expanded from its current ninth-through-12th-grade format to include grades 7 and 8. The change will take effect with the 2013-14 school year.
The church said in a news release that declining enrollment prompted it to close the elementary school.
"Regrettably the decline in enrollment during recent years has made it necessary not to reopen the lower grades for next year," the church said.
The church said its elementary students will be encouraged to enroll in one of the other Lutheran schools on Oahu: Our Savior in Aiea, Saint Mark in Kaneohe, Trinity in Wahiawa and Good Shepherd Preschool in Kalihi.

Church activity to alter traffic
There will be a temporary, one-way traffic pattern on Kapiolani Street in Hilo next week because of Christmas activities at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hawaii County officials said.
Traffic will be allowed only in the Puna, or southerly, direction on Kapiolani Street, between Waianuenue Avenue and Street, from 4 p.m. Monday to 3 a.m. Tuesday, and again from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.
During these times, parking will be allowed on both sides of Kapiolani Street.
