HILO, Hawaii >> Several roads on Hawaii island closed Saturday morning when heavy wind and rain caused downed trees and power outages.

According to the Hawaii County Police, Route 137 in Puna closed temporarily, along with Kohala Mountain Road on the north side of the island due to storm hazards and fallen trees and parts of Old Mamalahoa Highway.

Residents incurred power outages form the storm, but Hawaii Electric Light Co. spokeswoman Rhea Lee said they did not have an exact number of outages by 8 a.m. Saturday. 

"We’re still experiencing outages on the island," she said. 

A high wind advisory is in effect on the island until noon. 

A flood advisory expired for Hawaii island after heavy rain was falling over the leeward and southern parts of the island. 

According to the National Weather Service, a cold front moving across the Big Island is expected to produce strong to locally damaging winds while gusty northwest winds behind the front will continue across the remainder of the state Saturday. 

In addition, a strong, mid-level trough will remain on Hawaii island summits.  

Winds coming form the southwest to the west are expected to range 25 to 40 mph with localized gusts of 60 mph are expected. 

The strongest winds are likely to occur along exposed coastal areas and where winds accelerate downslope from higher terrain. Strong winds will also be present in showers and isolated thunderstorms. 

Strong winds can cause damage to roofs, trees, power poles, and powerlines and could cause difficulty when driving.
